Tennyson Essay Example For Students
Tennyson Essay In the book Idylls of the King by Alfred, Lord Tennyson there are many things throughout the different stories that show mist imagery. The significance of mist imagery is important. It could mean something new is coming, represent good, bad, or death. Mist can also help give a sense of feeling. Mist imagery can foreshadow events and lead a reader to think further into the story and what would happen. When the Lady of the Lake gave Excalibur to Arthur in The coming of Arthur, a mist of incense curled about her and her face. She was hidden and could not be seen. The mist signifies that the Lady of the Lake is to precious to be seen. The sword that was given to Arthur symbolizes something new and good. Arthur uses this sword to help King Leodogran fight a battle. They won this battlw and in return Arthur wanted to marry King Leodograns daughter, Givinevere. King Leodogran didnt know if Arthur was of noble birth, and couldnt decide if he should allow the marriage. Arthurs birth was not truely known and King Leodogran had to find someway of knowing the truth. Later that night King Leodogran had a dream. Streamd to the peak, and mingled with the haze/ And made it thicker; while the phantom king/ Sent out at times a voice; and here or there/ Stood one who pointed toward the voice, the rest/ Slew on and burnt, crying, No king of ours,/ No son of Uther, and no king of ours;/ Till with a w ink his dream was changed, the haze/ Descended, and the solid earth became/ As nothing, but the King stood out in heaven,/ Crownd. And Leodogran awoke, and sent (Tennyson 32-33). In this quote about mist imagery it gives an answer. When the mist clears and the king could see, it symbolizes that his answer was clear to him. The answer was yes, let Arthur marry Givinevere. In Merlin and Vivien, Merlin describes how he is feeling using the word mist. An ever-moaning battle in the mist (Tennyson 147). Here Merlin tells how his life is like a battle, meaning everything is going wrong. With the mist it makes it hard to see what can be done to make things go right. This mist also gives a feeling of sadness and gloom. Later in the story Merlin again speaks of his mind-mist (Tennyson 150). He was all out of sorts and didnt even realize Vivien had followed him. Vapor is all around when Vivien puts her face in Merlins beard. The vapor here shows that Merlins power is greater than Viviens. The story Givenivere mainly has mist that signifies something bad. Mist can also symbolize the coming of something unfavorable. Blurrd by the creeping mist, for all abroad,/ Beneath a moon unseen albeit at full,/ The white mist, like a face-cloth to the face,/ Clung to the dead earth, and the land was still./ For hither had she fled, her cause of flight (Tennyson 269). Here the mist is coming over the land so it is not visible. The mist gives a feeling that everything is dead. Mist can stand for death. When the king found Givenivere in her hiding place he went to visit her one last time. As he left, this was how the mist was described The moony vapour rolling round the King,/ Who seemd the phantom of a Giant in it,/ Enwound him fold by fold, and made him gray/ And grayer, till himself became as mist/ Before her, moving ghostlike to his doom.(Tennyson 284). This shows how mist is bad because as king Arthur leaves, the dark mist surrounds him leading to his death. You no longer see him an d are left with an eerie presence. There is no movement, no noise. It gives a sense of creepinessin the Passing of Arthur a mist comes over the sea and in the battle. This mist means doom for all. This mist was so thick you could not see anything in front of you. The knights would to out into battle and fight anyone. Knights would be killing their own knights. Lookd up for heaven, and only saw the mist; (Tennyson 291). In that close mist, and cryings for the light,/ Moans of the dying, and voices of the dead. (Tennyson 291). After the battle the mist clears and everyone is dead. This shows how evil the mist was. Because the knights couldnt see, they would kill whoever they were fighting, not knowing if it was an enemy. .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .postImageUrl , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:hover , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:visited , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:active { border:0!important; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:active , .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818 .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u3a9dd877e16fe61896eb85c06485f818:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Hate Crimes Essay We will write a custom essay on Tennyson specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now In each of these stories mist stood for something different. Free Essays on Movie Review I Am Sam
ââ¬Å"I am Samâ⬠is the story of mentally challenged Sam Dawson who is suddenly faced with raising his newborn daughter on his own after the mother leaves the two of them right outside of the hospital. Sam names the baby girl Lucy Diamond, after the Beatlesââ¬â¢ song ââ¬Å"Lucy in the Sky with Diamondsâ⬠. With the help of Annie, a wise and also watchful neighbor, and Samââ¬â¢s circle of mentally challenged friends, his informal support network, Sam manages to raise Lucy. Everything goes well until Lucy reaches age 7 which is the level of Samââ¬â¢s mental capacity. A series of unfortunate events makes a social worker become aware of the situation. She decides that Sam is an unfit father and that he cannot take care of Lucy any longer. The legal argument is that he wonââ¬â¢t be an appropriate parent once Lucy is mentally older than him. Sam and his friends realize they need help to ensure Samââ¬â¢s custody of Lucy and to fight the system. Rita Harrison takes the case free of charge but for completely selfish reasons. The moment she steps into the picture it becomes clear that the purpose of this movie is not only to show how a parent with a disability is caught in the legal and social service systems. There is more to it. The movie raises some serious questions that should be of concern for everyone in our society. What defines a ââ¬Ëgoodââ¬â¢ parent? Is it the amount of intellectual maturity displayed or the level of love given? Does being a competent parent have anything to do with money? And isnââ¬â¢t raising a child a challenge for everyone? Director Jessie Nelson wants to make the audience think. She indicates that everyone is damaged in one way or another. Sam may be severely disabled but he is not the only one with a problem. There is his neighbor Annie for example, who hasnââ¬â¢t left her house in years. Or his self-absorbed lawyer Rita who is not even able to spend time with her son. Rita works way too hard to support her shallow, cold and mate... Music and Soundscapes Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Music and Soundscapes - Research Paper Example The sound effects, sounds that are made outside of the scene and applied, are used in tandem with the scene (Klaus 136). In the clip from Jaws, the music has a duality, revealing both the joy of the chase and the seriousness of what they are about to accomplish. As the tension builds, so does the tension of the music. There is a playfulness, even within the music score that accompanies this scene. As the captain goes to shoot the shark, the tension builds even higher. Once the first shot is in, it builds towards him taking the next shot, but then descends as the barrel descends into the water. The music is complex, reflecting the moment. This is in contrast to the simplicity of the theme music that is so well known about the shark. In this scene, the humans feel that they are in control and that they are working the shark towards their own ends. However, there is a sense that this is not true, thus the playfulness within the music reflects something of the self-delusion that they are experiencing (Movie Clips. ââ¬ËBarrelsââ¬â¢ Jaws (1975). The sound in the ââ¬ËOpposites do not Attractââ¬â¢ in When Harry Met Sally is a series of sounds that are developed to reflect the situation. The two lead characters are riding in a car so the rush of the car as it travels underlies the sound.

WiMax A Technology for Tomorrow Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
WiMax A Technology for Tomorrow - Essay Example The penetration of ICT, and broadband as a means of access, are assessed for the GCC Countries and constraints facing these countries in reaping the full benefits of the modern technology identified. Means to address these problem areas are also suggested. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has inundated our lives and every day makes inroads into new areas. Use of broadband to access the internet and other facilities enabled by ICT has become fairly common all over the world, as also in the GCC countries. Till now only T1, DSL or cable based modem connections were possible for broadband access to the internet. Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) offers the new standard for providing access to the benefits of the new age technologies. The speeds at which data and voice and video transmissions can be made with the WiMax connections is unmatched by any of the conventional systems. This essay attempts to provide a brief overview of the WiMax standards being developed for wireless connectivity to broadband services. It also provides an assessment of the penetration and use of ICT in the GCC at present, and identifies the major constraints to rapid deployment of the use of this technology and suggests the ways in which these problems may be addressed in the immediate future. If the region is to keep pace, with the development and use of ICT by other countries, then action has to be initiated now to bring in wireless broadband connectivity, make it available to all citizens and sectors of the economy and above all, to train its people in the operation and use of the fantastic tool provided to us by modern technology. WiMax - A brief description WiMax is a set of evolving standards for point-to-multipoint wireless networking. For many years now point-to-multipoint microwave networks have been in operation. Provided by companies such as Alcatel and Siemens, these were based on proprietary technology, WiMax offers a standardised technology for enabling wireless broadband access to the internet [1]. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) described wireless connection to broadband services in its standard 802.16. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute lays down specifications, similar to IEEE 802.16, for the High-performance Metropolitan Area Network (HiperMAN). Development of standard specifications, covering both IEEE 802.16 and HiperMAN, was considered vital to the promotion of WiMax in order to ensure inter-operability and connectivity of networks provided by different providers. A non profit organisation 'The WiMax Forum' was formed and nearly all companies that are into wireless technology are members, this forum targeted to provide standards and commercialise this technology. The WiMax forum has nearly 100 members at present and represents the vast majority of bodies, commercial and otherwise, involved in developing the wireless protocol for access to the internet. (The term internet is used here and elsewhere in this paper for convenienc e and includes all transport technologies such as IPv4, IPv6, Ethernet and asynchronous transfer modes). The latest step in wireless computer networking, WiMax has the capability of covering an area having a radius of 30miles, which represents the size of a fairly large metropolis, and that is why

Discuss the writers use of the supernatural Essay Example for Free
Discuss the writers use of the supernatural Essay The two stories resemble each other with the idea they communicate with the reader, that people should respect the supernatural. In the Withered Arm, Thomas Hardy develops why we should fear and respect the supernatural by showing that by mocking Gertrude about her medicines and counter curses, Farmer Lodge ended up with a dead son and a dead wife. He also ended up selling all his land because he could not endure staying in the village with everyone gossiping about him. Also by keeping the tempo of the story fast and building up to all the supernatural events keeps us tense. In the Monkeys Paw, Sergeant Major Morris warns the White family about the consequences of the wishes the paw grants. However the White family do not take heed of the warning and take advantage of the paw and in doing so, they end up with their son dead, Mrs. White acting senselessly to try and bring back her son and Mr. White having to wish his son back to the grave. The author is trying to tell us that if you do not respect the supernatural and take advantage of it, you will feel its wrath. The two stories are alike in other ways. Both stories involve young innocent people suffering. In the Monkeys Paw Herbert died for his familys foolishness. Whilst in the Withered Arm it was Rhodas and Farmer Lodges son that was innocently sent to the gallows. Another similarity is that people that were selfish earlier on in the stories are punished in the end. Mr. White is self-seeking at the start of the Monkeys Paw and does not take Sergeant Major Morris advice and his son dies as a result. In the Withered Arm Farmer Lodge is punished for his negligence shown to his son and his failure to accept the responsibility for his son. The consequence for this is the eventual hanging of his only son. Also both stories have ironic twists. In the Monkeys Paw the family wishes for two hundred pounds and after the money doesnt appear straight away, Herbert says Well I dont see the money, and I bet I never shall. The wish eventually does come true and the money is handed over to the family but only as an insurance payout for Herberts death at the factory. So the irony is that Herbert will never actually see the money. In the Withered Arm the ironic twist is that when Gertrude was waiting for a hanging she got so desperate that she used to pray for a hanging O Lord, hang some guilty or innocent person soon! It turned out her prayers were answered but the man seen to be in the wrong turned out to be Farmer Lodges and Rhoda Brooks son but it seemed the boy was wrongfully charged with arson. At the hanging, Farmer Lodge and Rhoda were present in the crowd and once Gertrude had realized the hung man must be their son, she entered a sense of shock. This proved too much for her and she died. The irony is that she prayed for a man to be hung, so that she could cure herself but the man in the end was her husbands son and this did the opposite of curing her and the shock of it all ended her life. In conclusion, the writers use the supernatural to show the reader that if you ridicule the supernatural, it will backfire on you and you will feel the consequences greatly. Also they try and make you scared of the supernatural by making the paranormal events happen to normal people. Meaning it could have been you instead.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Essay -- American Government,
amilies Undisputedly poverty has been one of the major persistent social problems in the United States for hundreds of years. Poverty does not discriminate against Caucasians, African-Americans, Hispanics, Jews, homosexuals, heterosexuals, age, gender, or persons with disabilities. Poverty can strike any population, community, ethnic group, and family. According to the U.S Census Bureau, 43.6 million people were in poverty in 2009 which was an increase from 2008. (Insert citation for website). There are multiple causes of why a family or individual can fall into poverty, which includes but not limited to, disability, unemployment, age, and recessions, as for which we have seen through the 2008 recession and the Great Depression. Throughout this paper I will address poverty as a social problem and its causes. I will also focus on how children and family households headed by single mothers are effected by poverty, and how Temporary Assistance for Needy Families came about to help children and families in poverty. Before we can explain the causes of poverty, one must first define what poverty is. If you were to ask someone for their definition of poverty, you would get several different definitions. There has been much conflict in the United States over defining poverty, but according to Diana DiNitto (2007), poverty can be defined in six different ways. Poverty as deprivation, inequality, lack of human capital, culture, exploitation, and structure are the six different ways. When a family or individual does not have the adequate amount of income to meet all of their basic needs, they are described as being deprived. Poverty as deprivation explains that a family or individual is deprived when they are living below the standard of... ...account not all recipients are able to accept these types of jobs especially those with young children. I think that if a recipient has found a job but is unable to accept the job because of late hours and they have reached their two year mark, then they should be a grace period on their five year time limitation until they are unable to find a better job. The recipient may only be granted the grace period if they show documented proof that they have found a job but is unable to accept because of the circumstance of not having childcare during the work hours given. The government has created many programs under the Social Security Act to help prevent poverty. Even though programs similar to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families have done their part in trying to prevent poverty, revision must continue to be made it order to reduce the United States poverty rate.
